The IT Systems Administrator will lead information technology work for the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Chemical and Biological Systems Group and the Bioengineering Systems and Technologies Group. The Chemical and Biological Defense Systems Group develops systems and technologies to assist Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security stakeholders improve preparedness, surveillance, and response to complex challenges including disaster and incident management, border and maritime security, public health informatics, law enforcement, critical infrastructure protection, bioinformatics and biosignal processing, and chemical and biological defense. The Bioengineering Systems and Technologies Group seeks to improve the performance of human-centered missions through prevention of injury and disease, improving sensing and identification of people and their environment, and speeding rehabilitation and recovery.
These groups' IT needs are, by industry standards, considered complex in that there are 80+ users - many of whom are advanced - 100+ computers, multiple servers, multiple operating systems (Windows, Linux and Macintosh), and the need for customized IT solutions to suit various technical projects. This individual will supervise one other group IT administrator and will collaborate with a Division-level IT lead.
Key job responsibilities include technical planning, operational logistics, security issues, reporting and tracking as well as network configuration management and computer resource allocations. This includes deployment and maintenance of workstations, servers and networks as well as scheduling, capacity planning and all the other related hardware and services. A significant role is the setup, upgrade and maintenance of VMWare ESX Linux and Windows servers. In addition, user problem resolution, documentation of processes and problem resolution through a troubleshooting ticket system, development and maintenance of backup and system redundancy practices, researching and writing purchase justifications, and making presentations to an internal audience will be required.
Qualifications:
- B.S. in Computer Science or a related field plus 5+ years of relevant work experience.
- Experience administering a Linux fileserver with POSIX ACL permissions (to reflect Windows Domain permissions in Samba).
- The ability to utilize and generate scripts in various scripting languages (e.g. bash, Windows batch, perl, python).
- Experience working in a datacenter environment with KVMs, UPSs and Direct Attached SAN units.
- Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environments, including configuring NFS, NIS, DHCP and DNS and basic routing concepts. Direct experience with Cisco ASA Firewall/VPN units, Linux iptables, and networking protocols like 802.3ad is desired.
- Willingness to work on both local and remote systems deployment, involving occasional travel.
Additional Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Experience managing printers in a Linux Samba/CUPS implementation.
- Experience or training with Bacula Linux backup software, PostgreSQL databases, and Apache web services.
- Experience with documentation and strong security practices for classified computing systems (a small fraction of the group's machines).
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite, MATLAB, subversion, compilers and a variety of other Linux software.
