AppNexus is looking for a hands-on System Architect / DevOps Team Lead to join the Technical Operations team. This person will lead server-side development for DevOps which is a new engineering team we are forming to build highly scalable systems to automate our operations. This position will be responsible for working with other technical staff to architect, implement and support the back end for key operations tools to manage and automate our infrastructure.
The ideal candidate is hands-on and proactive when designing systems, is good at finding simple solutions to complex problems, and is comfortable working with other technical people to define and document requirements for key operations systems and tools. From those requirements, the candidate will architect, develop and support these tools.
The position will grow to include leading a small team of junior developers. The person who holds it needs to be motivated by solving interesting technical challenges.
The DevOps team will be responsible for applications such as the following:
System Event Manager – manages problems and other events from our platform and attempts to automate the response or automate understanding who best to fix and arming them with knowledge to quickly diagnose and fix
Application Execution Framework – process by which authenticated and authorized code can be run throughout our plant as needed
Cloud Management System – our ad platform sites on top of cloud infrastructure used internally and by other customers.
We have almost three thousand servers deployed in four data centers around the world (California, the Netherlands, and two in New Jersey, with more to come). These servers process thousands of ad serving requests per second – billions per day.
We are an all Linux shop (all production operations run on Linux) with mostly Macs for desktops. We use most of the standard technologies and packages you would expect in a Linux shop like perl, puppet, cacti, nagios, MySQL, PostgreSQL, apache, etc. We also use some higher end technologies and platforms like Netezza and Vertica and Hadoop.

Major responsibilities/duties
Architect and implement enhancements to key DevOps applications
Shepherd these tools into production, continue to support and improve over time
Identify other areas for automation – collaborate to design, implement and deploy
Development of RESTful APIs in major scripting languages
Write and Optimize SQL Queries
Develop SQL data models in collaboration with technical teams
Mentorship and work delegation to junior and other senior system engineers.
Identify an implement additional automation opportunities
Requirements of the position
Experience leading, managing and owning a significant enterprise application
Five or more years of software development
Two or more years experience with systems programing
Proven experience writing fast, scalable code
Proficiency with Unix/Linux system interfaces, utilities, and tools
Experience with writing unit tests within a testing framework
Experience consuming or providing APIs
Fluency in multiple scripting languages, including perl. Python is a highly desired second.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Experience designing and operating large, highly available systems – services that are online 100% of the time
Familiarity with fail safes and graceful failover to ensure 100% uptime
Good organizational skills
High professional standards and desire to continue to develops skills and growth professionally
Strong commitment and drive to deliver high quality service to all customers, regardless of whether they are internal or external
Experienced and fluent in SQL and database concepts
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, 24x7x365 hyper growth environment
Experience mentoring junior developers and/or engineers
Excellent troubleshooting skills
Substantial experience with networking from a systems standpoint to include but not limited to TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, ARP, NTP, SMTP, HTTP
Desired but not required
Bachelor Degree in CS or MIS, or equivalent experience desirable
