Our client has a contract to hire opportunity for a Linux Administrator. The contract period will last 3-6 months.

OUR CLIENT WILL NOT CONSIDER CORP TO CORP CANDIDATES AT THIS TIME.

Responsible for the installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance and troubleshooting of server hardware, operating systems, storage, software and utilities in a large enterprise environment.

Additional responsibilities include user account management, performance monitoring and tuning, data backup and recovery, and disaster recovery.

Participation on projects is focused on smoothing the transition of projects from development staff to production staff by performing operations activities within the project life cycle. This individual is accountable for managing both physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux farms under VMWare. Selected candidate will be working as a part of a team but will take ownership of supporting selected managed hosting solutions, monitoring, troubleshooting & resolving faults as they occur & within agreed SLAs. Responsibilities include; ensuring that all customer facing and internal company services are running satisfactorily, analysing alerts highlighted in monitoring systems, handling support escalations from clients & handling any other service affecting faults that may need attention.

Responsibilities

Install new/rebuild existing Servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.

Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.

Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary. Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.

Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.

Provide on and off hour support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.

Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.

Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary.

Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.

Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.

Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.

Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.

Strong troubleshooting & support skills essential. Troubleshoots and resolves system service issues and OS level issues. Interface with internal resources to bring escalated issues to resolution

Technical Experience/Skills Required

Extensive experience with RedHat Linux 5, 6.

Expert knowledge of VMware infrastructure, tools and products (Vsphere, Vmotion, SRM, etc) 4.x and 5.x

Linux knowledge for VMware Back End abilities

SAN knowledge for VSANs, backup networks, Cisco IOS, Netapp Ontap, DNS, multiple domains

Strong attention to detail for highly available environments (checks and balances on impact of changes to promote uptime)

Non-Technical Skills Required

Project management skills a definite asset.

Ability to conduct research into server issues and products as required.

Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.

Technical Experience/Skills Preferred

Bachelors degree in a technical field (Computer Science, IT,Information Systems) and/or equivalent level of experience.

5+ years' experience maintaining various Linux components in a mixed environment.

Shell Scripting experience is required.

Working knowledge of virtualization software (VMware Virtual Center), SAN, and relational databases (MySQL).

Working knowledge of Perl, python, ruby, PHP web applications.

Working knowledge of ESXi Scripting.

Administrative responsibilities with SAN and NAS storages, Cisco MDS, EMC DMX, Netapp.

Cisco UCS server experience a definite plus.

Experience compiling software using gnu and bsd tool chains.

The ability to work autonomously and with a diverse team.

Ability to communicate at all levels, present ideas and take charge of projects.

Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills required.

Ability to translate business requirements into technology requirements and needs.

Ability to translate technical information into business terms for management consideration.
