The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking a Linux System Administrator to support high-throughput sequencing efforts with the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD), located at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Frederick, Maryland.  HJF provides administrative and management support to BDRD.

BDRD is a cutting-edge research program that works to protect service members and civilians from biological threats.  Devising methods to combat biological warfare agents has been critical to ensuring the safety of U.S. service members and civilians.  BDRD has long been a leader in biological weapons defense research.  BDRD's laboratory at the Naval Medical Research Center was selected as one of just three national laboratories in the CDC Laboratory Response Network.  This distinction is a direct result of BDRD's expertise in the field.

Responsibilities are to monitor and maintain a Linux cluster for bioinformatic applications.

Responsibilities:

1.  Writes computer code to support high-throughput sequencing and genomic analysis efforts at a DoD sequencing center.

2.  Monitors system and network performance, configuration and support of systems and applications, account administration, system optimization, and user support.

3.  Works closely with researchers and IT staff to obtain requirements and propose solutions as necessary.

4.  Proactively makes technical recommendations to senior staff.

5.  Implements software installations as assigned.

6.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Operating Systems: Linux (RHEL, CentOS, SLES, Mac OS X). Basic Systems Administration: Linux installation, maintenance, upgrade, backup, NFS, TCP/IP Networking. Experience with Linux/UNIX server and cluster hardware setup and configuration, performance monitoring, tuning and troubleshooting. Experience working with highly complex system implementations and organizational processes. Experience with parallel and clustered file systems, MySQL, and SGE. Experience with LDAP, Apache HTTPd, rsync, MySQL, and SGE. Experience programming in Python, Ruby, Perl or Java.  Familiarity with bioinformatics and computational biology. Experience with parallel and clustered file systems. Prior involvement or interest in bioinformatics or human/cancer genomics a plus. Experience with DoD network systems a plus. Must be able to handle a variety of tasks, effectively solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and be able to shift priorities flexibly. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.

Minimum Experience:  2-4 years of administrator experience.

Work Environment:  Office environment.
