Our client is a small firm who has captured a niche market as a specialist in telecommunications network and traffic monitoring systems. Due to increased demand for their services, they have room on their team for an experienced Linux System Engineer.
This diverse and highly technical role will primarily involve building, deploying, supporting and troubleshooting Linux Servers. There will be frequent internal and external interaction, liaising with software engineering teams, participating in testing, assisting with installations at client sites, managing patch releases and delivering customer training.
With a strong client-facing element to this role, a blend of technical and consulting skills along with your customer focus will set you apart. Needless to say, strong interpersonal skills are a must, as you will be required to have deeply technical discussions with system engineering teams one minute, then high level conversations with project managers from the client side the next.
Requirements:
5+ years with the root password in a commercial setting
Advanced Linux system administration skills
Sound IP Networking skills, including infrastructure such as Routers and Switches
Strong experience building and deploying Linux systems according to specification
Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to rapidly identify root causes
First rate documentation skills
Experience with Puppet Configuration Management (not a show-stopper)
Good Shell Scripting skills (sh, bash, ksh etc)
Python, C, C++ (not a show-stopper) or the ability to learn
High level interpersonal and consulting skills
Desire to join a small yet growing team with a long term view
Tertiary qualification in IT related field
Knowledge of current and emerging telecommunications technologies, an appreciation for the software development life cycle and networking/signalling protocols is highly desirable.
